Definition of the smartphone

The term smartphone literally means: smart phone. That in itself is a good name for the successor of the famous mobile phone. Which will say nothing more than your smartphone is much more clever than a random mobile phone.

The main difference between a smartphone and a mobile phone is that there is an operating system, just like on a PC or Mac. Modern mobile phones are more than just calling. There were facilities for web browsing, a diary, photos and simple programs to run such as games. The possibilities were limited, however, the phone function remained the most important part. Until the smartphones were introduced.

The operating system allows the flexibility to work with a smartphone, like a computer, and more extensive programs to install. Actually a smartphone is more like a small portable computer with a phone function. Something, incidentally, some users complain because it is not always easy phone to a smartphone, all these extra features are sometimes in the way. An ordinary mobile phone there is often more attuned to it.

Smartphones also have special features that a mobile phones does not have: as a GPS function which allows the phone to use as a routeplanner. There is also a gyroscope, which keeps track of in which position the telephone is held, so that movements can be used to certain programs to operate. Think of a racing game by sending in the smartphone to the left or right. As smartphones can do more than ordinary mobile phones, they are also considerably more expensive to buy. Several hundred euros is quite normal. If they are offered in combination with monthly payment they are often cheaper.

Important parts
As a smartphone, a minicomputer, it appears strongly in terms of components on a PC or Mac. Thus, there is an internal memory, the size of which is very important for the proper running of all kinds of programs. The more memory, the better the software will operate. Think of the seamless video playback. Internal memory can be expanded with a memory card. For that, a memory slot must be present in the phone. In such a memory card, you can save music files to the smartphone to use as mp3 player.

Another important component is the display. That’s why the smartphone is a lot bigger then the mobile phone. Except that smartphones need a bigger screen because they are much more able to show in terms of image, the device is also controlled from this screen. It is also about a touch screen: a screen that responds to the pressure and movement of fingers or a special stylus. Certain types of smartphones, type in text using the touchscreen. There is a virtual keyboard on the screen. In other smartphones, a separate pull-out sofa or keyboard attached.

Smartphones often have multiple connection options. Thus they are well connected to other devices such as a computer, for example file sharing. The base connector is mini USB, a cable that can be connected to a regular USB port. Additionally, WiFi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity as standard.

The operating system has already been mentioned. Just as with computers, there are several types. There is Windows Mobile: a special version of Windows for smartphones. In addition, Symbian OS and Android are very popular. The iPhone runs the Apple smartphone operating system OS X. Each OS has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main thing to watch for are ease of operation and the number of programs available for OS: free or for a small fee.
